EXPRESSING AND UNDERSTANDING

Our preconceived notions dictate our creations just as they dictate our relationships. By attempting to create a “perfectly” stacked dot pattern, this painting challenges my assumptions in both relationships and creations. Drawing from the Zen practice in which artist attempt to create random dot patterns, the work directly contradicts this mindful practice and is instead an acknowledgement and acceptance of my own delusion. I often attempt to map my expectations onto my relationship with my mother, thus affixing myself to a rigid framework in which I lead myself into delusional expectations of our relationship rather than it being centered in reality.

Things are as they should be whether I like it or not.

This piece was created during my residency at The Hillstreet Country Club and shown in my solo show in the same space. It was one of my first major installation pieces.
